An excellently-researched and compellingly-written book about the early days of the medical specialty now known as plastic surgery, focusing largely on New Zealand-born surgeon Harold Gillies and his work in facial reconstruction of soldiers injured in WWI. Fitzharris' narrative remains engaging throughout, as she focuses on individual patients of Gillies and diverges somewhat to briefly explain the history of bloodbanking and other medical topics that dovetail with the main narrative.
