Leishmantis is a parasite that is transmitted to humans through sand fly bites. Usually, their host animal is a rat or other small mammal. In the Lost City, several members of the initial exploration group suffer various consequences from this parasite. Since they were in a deep jungle environment for several days, they suffered all kinds of insect bites. The treatment for Leishmantis is no fun. With global warming going on, there is evidence that this parasite is coming to the US.

Perfect read for the start of summer, what with the mix of adventure, discovery and disease hot zones. I appreciated the careful discussion of Native cultures and how they were decimated by diseases from the Old World, which gave Europeans (and other folk even today) the very false idea that Native populations are in some way inferior; and was surprised that archeologists can be such a petty, bitchy group! Interesting and recommended.

Preston touches on earlier explorations, Maya history, pre-contact history, diseases, modern history of Honduras, academic infighting, Lidar, along with descriptions of exploring the city hidden in the tropical rain

A really interesting book, but some parts, while also engaging, felt like they didn't belong in the book.

Also, we're all going to die of leishmaniasis. Sorry.
