Tuchman covers the "calamitous 14th century" with a writing style that is easy to digest despite being rather detailed.  This isn't just a military history focused on kings.  It is a descriptive, energetic and engaging history that includes: politics and relationships within and between England, France and the Italian city states, the various kings, nobles, popes, prelates and rebels; various disastrous wars between England and France with the resulting pillaging and depredation
