After finishing a book, I often take a few days to process the details and collect my thoughts before posting a review. But I knew what my review would say the moment I read the last page of Project Hail Mary.

I have always enjoyed reading sci-fi. And this book might be one of the best sci-fi books I’ve ever read.

I have always enjoyed reading sci-fi. And this book might be one of the best sci-fi books I’ve ever read.

Ryland Grace is a junior high school teacher who finds himself lost in space and must rely on his knowledge of microbiology, physics, relativity, and aerospace engineering to survive. It wasn’t always easy to grasp how Ryland was coming up with his theories and solutions. But the author’s creative and to-the-point writing style made it easy to understand the basics of how science works and space travel. I actually learned a few fascinating things about gravity and time-dilation.

Can I do this? Will I be rendered completely worthless from this point on? Will humanity die because I can’t handle zero g?

I clench my teeth. I clench my fists. I clench my butt. I clench every part of me that I know how to clench. It gives me a feeling of control. I’m doing something by aggressively doing nothing.

What really drew me into the story was the character growth, self discovery, and the unforgettable friendship that was found in the most unlikely place.

But just as I’m thinking that, something interesting happens.
KNOCK-KNOCK-KNOCK.
No, that’s not creepy at all. Being in a spaceship twelve light-years from home and having someone knock on the door is totally normal.

I can’t say too much about the plot without giving away spoilers. But I must say….….I loved Rocky! He and Ryland were quite the odd pair and I thoroughly enjoyed the humor and witty commentary between them. It was heartwarming to watch their friendship grow and I often wished I could crawl inside the book for only a moment to meet Rocky. I look forward to seeing him come to life on screen.

Overall, it was a story like no other I have ever read. Project Hail Mary is about one man’s terrifying journey through space and the magnificent things he learned about himself and the universe around him. The only thing I didn’t care for was the occasional profanity…….which I expected it being this book was written by Andy Weir. Otherwise….Project Hail Mary was an awesome memorable cosmic adventure. ...more

Five stars hands down!! I couldn’t put the book down though I guess it does look like I could since it took me two weeks to read it. Life happens!

Ryland’s story is powerful and is a reminder that we are stronger and more capable than we think we are. I love the dynamics and relationship between him and Rocky. I, however, wanted to punch Stratt in the face the entire time because it felt like she was using Ryland as a means to and end. Readers aren’t meant to love every character, so that is ok! ...more
