Einar and Lili are one and the same. Greta is his wife who first recognizes the woman in Einar. The book is fiction but loosely based on the real transgender woman Lili Elle and her marriage to Gerda. In the book, the emergence of Lili and the gradual fading of Einar is delicately and thoughtfully handled. The story is told from both Greta's perspective and Einar/Lili's perspective. It is a slow-moving novel that looks more into the hearts and minds of Einer/Lili and Greta who loves and supports
