Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens deserves its long held spot at the top of the New York Times Bestseller list. It's a rich human story with fascinating information and subplots. The writing is beautiful, as is the audio performance. The book could have been just another tearjerker about a lonely child (which would have been good imo), but the author added so much more. This was an easy 5 star book for me.

3.5 stars
There is much about this book that is beautiful, engaging, creative, original, heartbreaking.
Unfortunately, the writing is so inconsistent. Descriptions of the swamp lands and their flora and fauna are transcendent. Dialogue - of which there is a tad too much - has a stilted, clumsy feel.
I did read this straight through, though. It’s definitely compelling, and I would recommend it.
