A long book but not the 800 pages I expected as half is footnotes. This is historic nonfiction told in narrative form drawing on primary sources. Very informative, interesting, and intriguing. You have four women’s lives during the US Civil War, two fighting on each side. One dresses as a soldier for 3 years, one spies for the South in Washington, one spies for the North in Richmond, and one spies and plays on her wiles in search of attention and fame. An interesting cast of historic characters.
