Not what I was expecting. I was expecting more of a historical account of the actual Underground Railroad rather than a fictionalized version with trains, tracks and stations. Nevertheless, the lives of slaves on a plantation and the horrific journey of escaping and fear of being captured and returned was horrific to read about. This was my first Colson Whitehead novel. His writing style is different, not totally my taste, but there are some profound, strong and memorable sentences and passages ...more
