2nd review
“Because time is cruel to all, and crueler still to artists. Because vision weakens, and voices wither, and talent fades. (...) Because happiness is brief, and history is lasting, and in the end... everyone wants to be remembered”
a story with such a synopsis and author has almost no way that it could go wrong. and it didn't! almost...

Have you read Life After Life by Kate Atkinson? Hailed as a classic with numerous awards to its name, I am probably the only outcast who was not head over heels in love with its plot. When V E Schwab’s The Invisible Life of Addie Larue was said to be in similar vein to Life after Life, I was a bit sceptical to take it up dreading the boredom but am so happy to have been pleasantly surprised with this unique concept of a girl winning the odds against the devil.

If you're looking for a book that's going to make you cry from beginning to end then look no further.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue tore my heart apart and the through it in the garbage.
This book is one of the most amazing stories I have ever read and a definite highlight of my 2021, even though, the year just started. It is also one of the most interesting 'be careful what you wish for' / 'deal with the devil' stories I have ever read. The ending was also bittersweet, as I was hoping it woul ...more

If it weren't for that ending I think I would've given it 2 stars.
The Good
I like how it's written, they way in which Schwab places one word after the other, for example:
The books is so poetic and as a whole it sends a great message. From my perspective I would say it's a book about life, greed and human emotions. That you can wish all you want but everything in the end has a price.

Addie LaRue is a remarkable character. What a spectacular book.
In The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, the protagonist is initially a young girl who then comes of age at a time in rural France where she is betrothed to a local young man. She is a dreamer who cannot imagine living and dying in the same little town where she was born. She has always dreamed of more, seeing the world, experiencing new things, loving who she chose. She bargains with a god of darkness and as is typical in such things, ...more

****3 STARS****
After much procrastination, I finally got around to reading Addie Larue, and let me tell you I was expecting a lot more from it. Giving this book a 3 star ONLY for the later half which was a more thrilling experience than the slow-paced first half.
You’ll find the book to be written in poetic prose which was beautiful at times but lacked luster.
*yes I see you ardent fans out there giving me the stink eye*
The first 30 percent of the book was really tedious for me to get through.

V. E. Schwab never disappoints. The writing style is beautiful, the plot is great, although a bit slow, and the characters are what truly drove the story. All of them are flawed and complicated but that’s what made me love them more. I think my favorite is Henry, he deserves the world.

I know many folks adored this book, but I found it a real challenge to finish. I read comments from folks 25-30% into it who wanted to know if it got better--they were assured by others that it did. Sadly, based on those recommendations, I persevered, and it took me about 2 months to struggle through to the end--still waiting for it to be better, although it did pick up a little from time to time starting about mid-book. I was listening to and reading other things in the meantime, and only retur

I couldn't put it down, I can't remember who recommended this book to me - but thank you! I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to!
