What Members Thought

second read: loved it even more the second time. i literally could not put it down. this book is underrated and underappreciated and everyone needs to read it at some point.

cawpile 7.8

initial thoughts:
- y’all i finished this book in 48 hours
- took me awhile to get into it, but once i was, i was super invested
- i LOVE laia as a heroine
- she wasn’t typical—she had to overcome cowardice, become brave
- i’m one that hates love geometry, but this love square? this was art.
- these ancient rome vibes we

i loved this omg,, this singlehandedly got me out of my reading slump and also back into the fantasy genre!! beautiful writing, complex characters, and excellent world building + plot ! it did fall flat at a few points and i still am not that fond of the colonized x colonizer trope which is why it lost a star but i might like elias and laia together in the next book we'll see 🤠

“You are an ember in the ashes, Elias Veturius. You will spark and burn, ravage and destroy. You cannot change it. You cannot stop it.”

“You are full, Laia. Full of life and dark and strength and spirit. You are in our dreams. You will burn, for you are an ember in the ashes.”

Despite this book taking me a long time to read, I really enjoyed it. I love Tahir’s writing and her characters.

This book was a roller coaster. It was off to a relatively slow start for me and there were times when I paused reading this book because I wasn’t able to get a 100% involved in the story but that quickly began to change the longer I flipped the pages. It wasn’t just a simple story of two people on opposing sides falling in love and finding a common cause to believe in. That’s something that hardly even happened. It was so complex with characters to love, with so many foes in every dir

God! What do I even say? This book was action-packed with amazing characters, rich world-building and a page-turning factor in it. I loved everything about it, everything. Helene has to be my favourite character—her loyalty, valor, sacrifice never failed to daunt me. Izzi, too, is a lovely character. Elias and Laia were one of the most unique protagonists, but only one thing bothers me about Laia. And, that is, she isn’t headstrong. She doesn’t stand up for herself, and depends on others to save ...more
