So this was better than the first book, but I actually liked Alina less. And I'm not sure why. I think it might be because Nikolas came onto the stage and wiped the floor from everybody with his amazing character. Compared to him, Alina was just a whiny, annoying child.

Damn girls with their damn ignorance. I'm sick of all these girls in books that have devoted boyfriends and they just ignore them and keep secrets from them.

A relationship should not have secrets! It only makes everything worse.

Someone said the darkling reminds them of warner from shatter me. At one point I totally get it, but at the same time I ended up loving warner at the end. I don't think I could possibly love ...more

Nikolai really was a welcome part to this story. I enjoyed him throughout the book when he the the pirate and the prince; he is a charmer. There was not enough of the Darkling for my liking but the moments we did get were done well. I know there are a lot of people that seem to be rooting for the Darkling and Alina and yes the book keeps saying "like calls to like" and due to their powers they are similar but a I'm really enjoying this series even if this book left me feeling a little depressed. That's why he really wants Alina for her power he can't really like her for her. That would be absurd. Besides her power I really don't think there is anything that special about her.

It's her power that everyone wants. Nikolai wants her by his side because it would be a sign of strength for his rule. The Darkling wants to control the power to rule over all. And then there is Mal. Her best friend. I may be in the minority here but I like Mal. Sure he can drive me a little crazy somethings but so can Alina (probably more). Mal deserted for her, he stays for her and fights for her. Because he loves her. Now I can play this another way that Mal just misses the way things used to be with them. He was the powerful one growing up. He was good at everything he tried, he made friends easily, he's good looking and charming. He's always been about to rely on Alina to be there for him. Until she wasn't there anymore. That's when he realized he couldn't live with her. This may be a bit of a problem. Alina has liked him for a lot longer but now she is the one that has a power greater than his. She could become royalty while he will always be "common".

I get why Nikolai wanted to keep Mal and Alina's love a secret he wanted to be able to court her at least in the eyes of the people but in terms of Mal and Alina I wouldn't have let this happen. Not if they really wanted to be together. This destroyed them, that and the Darkling, Alina came clean a little too late about her "visions" of the Darkling.

I think neither one of them really knows how to give the other up, but I can't see them truly staying together until the end. Mal will be a catch to some lucky girl that is able to live free with him. Alina if she doesn't die will always be at war with something or someone. there will always be someone that wants to take something from her. Due to her power I think that's what her life will be like and she can't go back to being carefree with Mal.

The other amplifiers are also another big point in the story. Alina wants to them all Mal knows that more power will just push them further apart. and he's right, they are no longer right together. They've changed and their friendship won't survive either. Which is too bad they are each others family as well.

I hope to see more of the Darkling in the next book.

I really liked this book for the ship scenes, the new characters introduced were really good, they brought a new taste to the story. Sturmhond and Nikolai were both amazing, I never got bored with him, the way he acted was always intriguing and cool. Alina and Mal weren't doing so well. I don't know what was wrong with them but I can understand they were out of their element, and I am glad things didn't escalate to stupidity, but I wanted more from the main charachters. Mal is so insecure and annoying. It's a shame because I kind of liked him as a character in the first book. But this was the most middle-book syndrome-ish book to ever exist. Se me paso rapidísimo este libro. Me enganché de principio a fin. El arco de todos los personajes es claro y creíble y reconocemos a todos los nuevos enseguida así como también es fácil situarse en las distintas locaciones.
El final es tremendo pero yo le hubiera quitado el epílogo porque se roba mucha de la intriga que te deja lo sucedido. Dejame esperar al siguiente libro!!
