Perfectly lovely story about growing up.
It is interesting to see how much descendants from Mexican immigrants struggle with their identity. On one hand, they are Mexican, and the world will not let them forget it. Most of them are still in touch with their roots and their culture. On the other hand, they were born and raised in America. They know nothing - or very little - of Mexico. They feel torn and like they don't quite belong to either group.

(I tried to copy/paste the quote, it wouldn't let me, so figured screenshot was the next best thing)
It will be difficult to write a review without giving a lot of spoilers, however I *can* say that this is a beautiful, poignant, "coming of age" YA story set in the 80s. For the two teens, named Ari and Dante, its about learning of their "ecotone" - both internally and externally, about finding the balance and peace with it. It's about discovering who they are and how they fit in the world, microc ...more

Simply amazing! How do you know you're in love when you don't understand what love means? A beautiful story about discovering who you really are and how you fit into this big, crazy world. Everybody has secrets, trouble expressing themselves, awkward adolescent problems. In this simple, yet lyrical story, Ari and Dante learn what secrets the universe may reveal.

There is a deftness to how the variability is handled that had me awed thru most of the book. It's disarming and personal. Intimate and awkward but ultimately understandable and relatable. It's all the thoughts you think but don't dare to let others hear. But here. Here in this book it was safe.

A refreshingly honest look at life through the eyes of a teenage boy.
Ari and Dante are two loners who seem to find each other and through that process, they find a wonderful friendship which is not often seen nowadays. Ari with his self induced seclusion and Dante with his boyhood antics don't seem like a pair who would be destined to become best friends but in each other they find a way to build a bond which is stronger than you could ever imagine. They both have a way of bringing out the best ...more

This was honestly one of the best books I have ever read, It spoke straight to me in a way no other book ever has. Being gay and growing up feeling different, it seemed like Ari was telling my story at times; This book is truly amazing as well as incredibly touching and I am absolutely in love with it!! I will re-read and re-read and re-read.

“I don't always have to understand the people I love.” This quote is one of the most relatable parts of this book.
Even on a reread, this book makes me cry! 100% recommend to everyone! ...more
