Hey guys, so I just finished Heartless by Marissa Meyer, and I truly liked this rendition of the back story of the queen of hearts. I've read another book depicting the story of the queen and while I enjoyed that version, I liked Meyers tale far better. One aspect I enjoyed was that she basically kept the known characters in their normal forms. Like Cheshire remained a cat. I read another book about the queen of hearts and that author had converted all the characters into human counterparts. I've read another book depicting the story of the queen and while I enjoyed that version, I liked Meyers tale far better. One aspect I enjoyed was that she basically kept the known characters in their normal forms. Like Cheshire remained a cat. I read another book about the queen of hearts and that author had converted all the characters into human counterparts. I also admired how Meyer described some of the jobs that they had. Like the Caterpillar owning a shoe shop, can so imagine that. Heartless had a lot of parallels to the classic Alice in wonderland, and I liked that Meyer tried her best to not butcher that. Even though she added new characters, which was a necessary for the book to he unique. Among those new characters were Jest and The Raven. Jest, the court joker was definitely my fav, his humor, his charm, his everything was just swoon worthy. Even though it didn't really say much into his past, except for what he was doing in Hearts. I kinda wanted to know.more about him. But I'm afraid that will never happen.... Anyway, I was intrigued about the Raven, I thought that was more of a Maleficent thing. Oh well, I liked his character nevertheless. Of the characters I hated, the king. He was such a bafoon. Definitely idiotic. And then the Peters, they were strange from the start.. And then of course Catherines parents. Oy. I'm surprised it wasn't them who drove her to insanity. With that point, I truly admire books that dive into the souls of villains, for most are just misunderstood. Well, most of the Disney villains anyway. No one is borne evil, something turns them that way. Thus, I liked reading about the Queen of hearts before she was queen. She was just a girl who dreamed, who believed, who loved. But that was stolen from her. Hell, I can understand why she wanted revenge and why grief took control. It wasn't her fault.... Okay, I think I just let my thoughts wander... All in all, this book was an easy read, didn't have took much detail, but kidt enough to create good imagery. I don't know if there is going to he a second, I think it would be good just as a stand alone. But only the author is the judge of that.

We all know the story of Alice in Wonderland and the crazy Queen of Hearts but we never really get a back story.

This is the story of Catherine who will later become the blood thirsty crazy queen. Meyer has woven a wonderful story to explain just what it takes to make someone go mad. Brilliantly weaving in the storyline of other characters from the book, we find out what happens long before Alice arrives.

I will say that I was never a fan of Alice in Wonderland but this book I loved! So well done! ...more
