Can you really complain that a Spanish writer does not use melodrama in moderation? You cannot. So I can only say that it seemed to me overlong and overcooked, and I abandonded it at about the 60% mark. Perhaps I would be better disposed to this if the writer had elected to skip treating the horrors of the Franco regime in the arch manner of a 1990s French film.

A literary novel about a young man in Franco's Spain. It starts out with strong magical realist vibes but ends up with a plot more odd than otherworldly. ...more

Neo-Gothic novel set in post-Civil War Spain. Creepy and dreamy. A must read.
