If I had liked this book more this review would be full of D&D spell puns. I am not displeased. The characters are interesting and the concept is neat. But it feels like book one in an ongoing series.
I empathize with a group of middle-aged people who get to reexperience a youthful adventure and really just want to get home.
And the compilation title is hilarious.

Portal fantasy where the fantasy world is a D&D-esque fantasy land: teens who played the game (and got sucked into it) now have to return as adults.
I imagine your mileage here may significantly depend on your love for RPGs and fantasy, as Gillen is clearly playing with those paints. (The afterwords -- included in the trade -- talk about the inciting idea for this story, as well as how Gillen created an actual RPG that goes along with this, and how the game and the story fed into each other.)

I've heard that the author set out to create a more realistic "adult" take on the old Dungeons & Dragons Saturday morning cartoon, and if that's the case then they succeeded. It's just too depressing for my taste.
