just a fair warning, you probably won’t find this sad if you’re familiar with the iliad. (…unless i’m just heartless?!) which…kinda sucks, since i was looking for a good cry, but oh well!!
miller has such a beautiful writing style. i quickly fell in love with this book and patroclus and achilles. even though i already knew the basic plot points due to being familiar with the iliad, miller brought new energy and thoughts into this retelling to make it more enjoyable.

Although by now many know the classic tale of Achilles, Madeline Miller focuses more on his close companion Patroclus. This allows us to watch the life of the demigod’s take more unfold from a new point of view. Miller’s twist does not diverge from the Greek myth, if any thing, it adds a nice new outlook on the story. The book was a page turner to me and many sentences were created memorable quotes.

"The memories come, and come. She listens, staring into the grain of the stone. We are all there, goddess and mortal and the boy who was both."
My words can’t give this book the justification it deserves. The Song of Achilles broke my heart.
Madeline Miller’s writing and language is beautiful, and Achilles is more gentle and kind than I’ve seen him represented in other retellings. But those retellings weren’t told from the perspective of Patroclus. And it is his narration that truly makes this no ...more

Sometimes in movies I want to skip past the fight scenes because it's all been done. But not with this book. I felt like I was there, seeing the chariots charge and the spears piecing through the air and well, through people. The war/fight scenes were well written, which makes you feel like you're right there.
It's a good contrast to the more tender times Achilles and Patroclus had in the beginning of the book. Ultimately I knew what was going to happen but I was still upset when it did.
