This is a great first story. Almost non-stop adventure with a likable hero/wizard. Part of the book's fascination is that it's set in modern-day Chicago. The setting makes the story almost seem possible.
I must also say that the book is extremely well read by James Marsters. He seems to have a real feel for the character. ...more

Okay, so I read the series out of sequence, but I am totally glad to have found this one at my local library. Sets Harry's character up nicely and frames the future books beautifully.

Intro to Harry Dresden, I didn't LOVE it, but Matt says the rest of the books get better.

Hooked since book one.
Jim never ceases to amaze me and lead me into a breathtaking roller coaster of fun. With twists and turns, he makes the subject of wizardry, the arcane arts and all matter of the macabre approachable and easy to understand. If you read only one series or if you have ever been curious may i suggest The Dresden files.

A great intro to the series. I like the magic system and how the "rules" of the system are intertwined with the narrative.
