When I first started this, I did not like Eadlyn's character. She took some time to grow on me. But she does, in her own way. As the future queen, and daughter of the beloved Maxon and America, she has a lot to live up to. The people are still unhappy with their lives and she it told to host a Selection a a distraction so her parents and officials can hopefully find some solutions. She wants nothing to do with the boys that show up and boy does it show!

"The Heir", the fourth book in the Selection series, wasn't as interesting and captivating as the previous books were.

I must admit I didn't originally planned to read this book since I wasn't a big fan of the Selection original trilogy. But then I decided to give it a try in case Kiera Cass took a different turn with this book. I wasn't 100% disappointed and I must admit I liked it, even though not so much as to give it many Goodreads stars.
Well, let's talk about the characters a little bit. For "The Heir", the fourth book in the Selection series, wasn't as interesting and captivating as the previous books were.

I must admit I didn't originally planned to read this book since I wasn't a big fan of the Selection original trilogy. But then I decided to give it a try in case Kiera Cass took a different turn with this book. I wasn't 100% disappointed and I must admit I liked it, even though not so much as to give it many Goodreads stars.
Well, let's talk about the characters a little bit. For about the first half of the book, I think I hated Eadlyn, she was nothing more than a spoiled royal girl who didn't know how to talk to others, when to respect them and how to care about others than herself. But, towards the end of the book, Eadlyn's character underwent a fairly big development. She became more sentimental, kinder, braver, wiser. Ahren's character was unbelievably cute as well, and I fell in love with his love for Camille and the way their relationship turned out in the end. Kiera Cass let me down, though, when it came to America and Maxon. Both of them were a huge part of the previous books of the series, and now they seemed so flat and underdeveloped, almost as if they were invisible throughout the whole story. I wanted to feel more of their tangible love, but I was only fed bits and pieces here and there. Just, no. I wanted something more, Kiera.
The plot was almost non-existent. Eadlyn didn't know how to decide between one boy or the other and the ending seemed rushed and only thrown there to keep the readers on their toes for the next book. Most of the Selected boys were unpleasant, rude and ignorant and the ones who could make this whole thing work out -supposedly that Eadlyn chooses one of them- weren't developed to the extent where this book could look more like a deep psychobiography and less than the same old Selection drama. ~Sighing~
Overall, 2 out of 5 stars. I'll probably pick up the final book, just to see how the story will end and if Kiera Cass will have evolved as a writer. I really hope she will. Her writing is simple but beautiful, but "The Heir" seemed like a cheap book to me and I thought that she didn't give it much thought or attention, at least not to the extent that she did to the other books in the series. The plot twists weren't "fireworks", the love interests almost boring and the main character wasn't as well-driven as America was, at least in the "The One" book. In five words, I was not a fan. I really wanted to love this book but it didn't want to love me back, I guess. I totally recommend it, though, to people who've loved the previous books and enjoy reading stories about royalty with a hint of the Bachelor TV show. ...more

This series is thoroughly addicting for me. I was skeptical of this one moving forward 20ish years and not being focused on America and Maxon...but I still flew through it and was hooked the entire time.
I did love the story, but I do not like Eadlyn very much. I feel like she is VERY spoiled, bratty, and often could benefit from someone setting her straight. (view spoiler) ...more

I liked this book a lot and the only reason I didn't rate it higher was I had a harder time connecting to these characters. I did enjoy it and the story was just as good but I wasn't in love with the spoiled main character Eadlyn. I finally started liking her in the last chapter and now I cannot wait to read The Crown. It is still a book I would recommend to others and I still love the way Kiera Cass writes and weaves her tale, so I am looking forward to reading the last book in the Selection se ...more

Princess Eadlyn is not nearly as pleasant or interesting as her parents were during their Selection, so it's hard to enjoy her acerbic personality.
