Genuinely creepy and claustrophobic, it worked better having one main character who saw this all play out. Even the descent down was chilling. The child abuse history and flashbacks were dark - Cutter seems to have demented animal abuser characters in his books - this time in the form of a brilliant, sociopathic brother. I would have rated five stars if not all the animal stuff - a reason I can't keep reading his books - but I did enjoy this one much more than The Troop. Truly eerie and the flas ...more

The Troop is a fantastic horror novel so I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to get around to reading this book by the same author!
The gruesome, claustrophobic terror levels of this book were sky high. Proper toe curling, book gripping suspenseful horror.

Fair warning though, I don't cry much at books but this one had me blubbing. ...more

I'm sorry but I just didn't like this at all. The beginning was so interesting and then it just went off the rails. I was bored to death and found that I didn't care for any of the characters except for the dog. ...more

I thought the idea for this was great. And when the characters were battling themselves and the elements it was interesting and scary. But there were soooo many flashbacks that the author didn't really need that it kept taking me out of the story. I also have to admit that I'm pretty sure that the US military wouldn't send a random vet with obvious psychological issues into such a situation without more support or a better plan. ...more
