The THETIS is a huge multigenerational spaceship carrying the last of humans from Earth. They’re traveling a mega long distance to settle on another planet and hopefully prosper. Generations by Noam Josephides is a really enjoyable sci fi mystery/thriller set on a giant 'generation' ship (the Thetis) which is transporting the last remnants of humanity to a new home among the stars. The title comes from the fact that this is a multi generational voyage where entire generations of people live and die entirely in space.

Where do we go when Earth is uninhabitable? That is the question that hangs over what's left of the human race. Centuries in the future, humans have left the planet Earth in search of a new planet to call home.

Meanwhile, generations of humans are being born in space, living in space, and dying in space, all for what they hope is a brighter future. Their sense of purpose is instilled in them from when they are born, and everyone trusts that everyone else is working towards the shared purpose.

This is a sci-fi thriller, and I don't always read much sci-fi, but I find it an interesting genre, when the author creates a world for the reader and brings it to life in a unique and interesting way. I liked Sandrine as a protagonist, and I liked the way she expressed herself. Her narrative helped me to connect with the author's world, bringing it, and the other characters to life. Nyasa was another character that I liked.

Eight generations ago, a mission was launched to save the last of humanity and convey them to a safe planet in order to resettle. The Thetis has been travelling through space for over a century and is finally nearing its destination, but all is not well on board. When the ship’s leader, the Primo, is targeted by an extortion attempt, Senior Archivist Sandrine Liet is tasked with investigating, only for the Primo to abruptly shut down the case before she can get too far. Not only that, but the prime suspect goes missing. As Sandrine begins to dig deeper, she finds herself mired in what is beginning to look increasingly like a terrible conspiracy that will put everyone on the Thetis at risk, and every clue she unearths points straight back at the most powerful people on board. Continuing her investigation puts her at no small personal risk and she will need to decide if she is willing to make that sacrifice.

Though I don’t read science fiction novels very frequently, I do enjoy them, and this one sounded right up my alley, checking off all the elements I like in the genre.

It was evident early on that this book was going to be all about the journey through space and less about the destination, a good thing, as it set the expectations for the reader immediately, and for me, allowed me to keep my focus on the right part of the plot. This also made it somewhat different from other novels in the genre I’ve seen with similar themes.

I absolutely loved the world building such as it was. The Thetis was described so well, the various levels of the ship, its sectors, labs, habitats, and even its workings. There was a lot of history included relating to how the ship was originally built and what motivated the project, along with how the founders planned out the functioning of generations upon generations to adapt them to first space, and eventually to resettle on a new planet, and I found it all extremely fascinating. The author has clearly put a lot of thought into this aspect, and though this was a standalone novel, these details never felt like an info dump at any point.

As for the plot itself, I really enjoyed following Sandrine’s investigation into the mystery and how it tied in with the politics aboard the ship. It made this an incredibly interesting read with several unexpected twists.

The pace was initially a little slow, unsurprising for a character driven book, but it picked up eventually, and I was completely glued to the pages. I did find what I assume was meant to be ship talk to be rather annoying because it kept distracting me.

Apart from that though, this was such an immersive read and I felt like I was right there with Sandrine, wandering the Thetis in search of the truth. This book was a bit long, but well worth the effort.

Sandrine was a well written and likeable character. She was born in space and is also part of a generation destined to die in space and never see the planet they’re all headed for. The author has done a great job imagining the mindset of such an intermediate generation, along with how the culture on board would develop, which made for a great cast of characters in general, though Sandrine was the central focus.

While the ending was quite action packed and exciting, I did find it to be rushed and maybe a little too easy. Considering the depth of the conspiracy Sandrine uncovered, I just felt there should have been more of a fuss made about it. Still, it was a satisfying conclusion, and the epilogue was a nice touch. There is certainly room for a sequel or spin off, and I’d certainly read it if there is one.

Generations was an engrossing read from beginning to end, and I was rather sad to turn the last pages. This was a very promising debut and I’m looking forward to seeing what the author will write next! Highly recommended! ...more
