Such an intense and emotional story!. Though it is historical fiction it was influenced by the real life Lumpkin slave jail in Richmond, Virginia also known as “the Devil’s half acre”. It was owned and operated by a brutal man named Robert Lumpkin who was married to a mulatto woman named Mary Lumpkin. They had 5 children and when he died he left everything to her.
