Thanks to the deleting this book has suffered I don't have my original review anymore and I can't recapture the impressions I got when I first read this. I didn't even remember exactly when I read it, so I'm going with the date it was published... I'm truly mad at this crusade some fellow librarians has been carrying. My favorite thing about re-reading books is being able to take things more slowly the second time around. I got so much more out of this novella than I did the first time. I love how it expands on the beginnings of the found family established in TLS and forges deeper connections between Brand and his misfit court. Our Half House gang + Quinn, Addam & Ciaran are back in this long novella featuring a complete, encapsulated adventure. It was every bit as good as the main novels with wacky fun, sharp dialogue, set in one of the inadvertently created corners of the magical world of Arcana. I adore these recovering, damaged individuals and their relationships between each other. And I'm delighted and in awe of the unique creativity that concocted this world.

I just love this author. I'm going to start the review like this because I feel like it's something I should be clear about. I'm a a huge fan. This review isn't impartial.
I was really excited when Keith said he was going to release a (free) novella, but I knew I was going to suffer more if I had read it chapter by chapter. I was really excited when Keith said he was going to release a (free) novella, but I knew I was going to suffer more if I had read it chapter by chapter. So when he released the whole thing I was ECSTATIC. However, my brand-new-motherhood-life kept me from actually reading it. Now I'm more used to it (and my baby boy), I finally picked it up and gave it a few days of attention (days, bc as I just pointed out, I have a baby). To be honest I wasn't expecting a lot, I thought it would be just like a few cute scenes, a few Brand/Rune moments and that's it.
What I got instead? A novella about being a family. Sort of. I have a complicated background that made me get a new family and never look back. So when I read things like they trying to make Max feel like he's home, my heart is going to melt for sure. I has an amazing mother in law who opened her arms and home to me, and that saved my life. I feel genuinely happy to see that Maz has one of those. Rune and Brand may not be the most showing-affection kind of person but they do care. Add that to all the amazingness of Quinn and Addam who just tags along without complaining at all and Ciaran who pretends to not even care.
We also get to see Rune talking about the Sun Throne, his aspect flaring, how much his people means to him, and a pretty important conversation between him and Addam. Hindsightly, I think this story was more about Rune than anything else. Which is very interesting because I didn't get this feeling with TLS nor THM.
About the actual plot of the story I don't wanna say much because I'm afraid I would spoil it. However, it was very interesting see new pieces of information about Atlantis world. But I need to say my word shattered when I read "We will move this conversation to the n******"
Not sure if I said it before, but I'm counting on Ciaran showing up aaaaall the time in the future books. I just loooove his confidence.
