Unfortunately this book didn't hit me in the way I was hoping it would, but it did for others and I'm so so glad that it did! I definitely want to read more of Kacen Callender's works (namely their middle grade and their adult fantasy) and if you're worried that this one won't be worth the hype: it probably will be. ...more

Discussions of gender identity and the self exploration that entails not being cis are incredibly rare to find in any form of media. Yet representation of marginalized identities also creates a safer space for marginalized folks, so this lack of knowing makes it even more difficult to not fit in the cis-heteronormative box.

Enter : the rare book with such amazing descriptions of what it is not to be cis or fully fit into the gender binary. Sadly, it was a subplot. I understand why it 3 / 5 stars

Enter : the rare book with such amazing descriptions of what it is not to be cis or fully fit into the gender binary. Sadly, it was a subplot. I understand why it is, but it honestly, to me, is the most important and most interesting part this.

I'm not transmasculine, so I obviously cannot speak on the specific representations. I can appreciate that it put in to words my and many other people's relationship with genders and the stereotypical binary. This acceptance and communal identity is such a fresh breath of air, so light and freeing. I'm forever grateful for what it did.

As much as I wish the subplot was all I read about, it was accompanied by characters and a main plot, sadly.

I can sympathize with the outright discrimination the Main Character faces. Although my experience does not lie within blatant transphobia, I am a queer wheelchair user in a heavily anti-minority area. But I have no experience in deadnaming. It's horrible what the Main Character went through, absolutely unacceptable.

That being said, I couldn't stand him. Or literally any character except the Main Character's Best Friend. Everyone is self-absorbed, manipulative, pretentious, and have the most generic millenials-on-tumblr conversations about sexuality known to humanity. (no offense to millenials on tumblr, I was just hoping for some nuance)

Now, I'm all in for drama, I'm not in it for characters that I can't stand. And there are some things that happen that are just inexcusable in my book (get it?) that are Very Important to the ongoings of the main plot.

Also, it isn't mentioned in the book at all, but the Main Character is definitely written as neurodivergent, and I would have appreciated some actual representation of disabilities and a discussion on those identities. But as I, and many other Disabled people, know : it's not going to happen in a nondisabled queer story.

So I appreciate what I got from this, but I did not appreciate the actual reading part of it. My bad, I guess. ...more

This book. This frickin book. I don't believe I've read a transmasc book this year so far but I relate to this book on another level. This book not only has the prettiest spine in the history of spines but it also has good writing,
