I was really hyped for this book due to all the good reviews but it seems this just wasn't for me.

This novel felt so much longer than it was and I felt as though I was forcing myself throughout it multiple times. Despite I still feel as though there were many missing scenes? All of this was most likely due to the pacing which wasn't my favorite.

The relationships felt flat to me but I enjoyed the exploration of sexuality and gender. It was my favorite part about this novel.

I went in with expectations. Yeah, I know, this one’s on me. But my expectations were completely wrong in the best way possible. I got to be baffled and amazed and really, really sad with the characters in a way I probably wouldn’t have had I actually known what was going on.

i can’t get enough of the queerness of this book!! this gorgeous prose needs to be studied in schools everywhere ASAP. the images this book put into my head are so realistic; it’s hard to remember that it was simply words on a page. the pace can be a bit slow at times and goddamn is this book dense, but IT! IS! WORTH! IT!

When I reflect on this book I don’t find happiness or envy and it dint bring me joy even in a sad way. What I do appreciate though, is the way the author managed to make me understand Zhu and all the decisions they made and their life and their heart and although I don’t agree with them and their philosophies I can appreciate their story.
