I'm a little behind on my ARCs., and at this point I'm not sure what I can say about this wonderful novel that hasn't already been said - I am definitely on board with the rave reviews. This book is the perfect example of books building empathy. Do I care at all about video games? No I do not. Do I now better understand the appeal? I sure do. Did I care about the characters? I sure did.

In a video game you have to make choices to guide you through the game. If you make a wrong choice you can go back and restart. In this amazing story of love and friendship Sam and Sadie meet as kids. A choice breaks their friendship for a long time. By chance they are reunited once again and their friendship has a restart. They begin a game company with their partner Marx and their lives journey through heartbreak, love, and endurance. Absolutely beautifully written!!

This book has been well reviewed and is still so popular over a year after publication. I was not particularly interested in the gaming or technology aspect of this story, but it was on the Lucky Day shelf at my NYPL branch, so I wanted to see if this was worth my while. I was immediately taken with the story of Sammy and Sadie at age 12. I kept turning the pages as they grew up, attend college and create their first game together, and I kept turning the pages as they navigated early adulthood.

I loved this beautifully written, immersive story of a special friendship, with all its ups and downs, spanning decades. Moving & absorbing.

When the hell will I learn that overly-hyped books that everyone loves ARE NOT FOR ME??!! Here we have the latest entry onto that list. (And in this case, I should have known better because I am also in the minority with not liking The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry.) Regarding this one, I really did like the beginning where Sadie and Sam (view spoiler) . But when (view spoiler)

"If their traumas are the most interesting thing about them, how do they get over any of it?" Sam asked. "I don't think they do. Or maybe they don't have to, I don't know." Sadie paused. "Since I've been teaching, I keep thinking about how lucky we were," she said. "We were lucky to be born when we were."

I really wanted to like this book. I read reviews that lauded it. The premise sounded fascinating. It follows a pair of video game designers from their first meeting as children on into their 40s. As fascinated as I was by the game designing, I didn’t like any of these characters very much. Quite regularly I wanted to smack them across the head and tell them to grow up and get over themselves!

4.5/5. I was hoping that the gaming bit wouldn't be as prominent as it ended up being, but this is still a very good novel. My full review can be found here. https://tcl-bookreviews.com/2024/07/0...
