What Members Thought
This book is very funny in places and full of interesting tidbits about Victorian life and social customs. The tone is light and conversational and is peppered with plenty of irony and snark. And certainly, many of the 'scientific' views, attitudes towards women, and ridiculously complex social mores the author describes deserve at the very least gentle derision. The tone was funny at first, but wore thin after a while. A couple times, jokes fell flat. Overall, I enjoyed the content, and the lighthearted approach to the topic, though.
