We start this book where Powerless left off. With Pae in the chimney and Kai setting the house on fire.
Pae does make it out and makes her run for the desert in order to cross to safety. Kai hot on her trail. Kitt is back at the palace trying to figure out how to make sense of everything that has gone on.

This seems to be another series where I’m not in line with the majority who love it! In summary, it’s a hot mess. Partly in a, I can’t look away (see: can’t stop reading) sort of way. But if you are looking for a great writing, complex plots which are masterfully woven, twists and turns you don’t see coming, my opinion is that these books are not for you! At the same time, they’re very light and readable. As harsh as this criticism may sound, I will pick up the final book when it’s out.

This was so enjoyable; I loved the cat and mouse dynamic between Kai and Paedyn, and the banter that came along with it. The yearning in this book was top tier, and Kai Azer is becoming a very memorable book boyfriend with some of those lines. "I think I would fall on my sword if it meant you mourned me." Like okay, let him cook. I loved that Lenny made a reappearance and delivered one of my favorite lines, "Don't live to die, die because you lived." Slay king.
