Things I loved about this book:
We had more character development of side characters. Ridoc is hilarious and his personality really starts to shine. We see a side of Dain we hadn't seen before. Shelves: fantasy

I took my time with this one, but definitely have not been glued to the storyline the entire time like reading the first two books.
I kept reminding myself — that Rebecca wrote Fourth Wing for herself and before all the intenseness of it getting extremely popular. Which is why it’s still the best book of this series, it has the best tension and the best moments with the dragons and being fresh in the war college. The relationship with Xaden and Violet getting together was probably peak in Fourth I took my time with this one, but definitely have not been glued to the storyline the entire time like reading the first two books.

I’m not sure at all that the Venin storyline works for this series or makes any kind of good tension for their relationship. This isn’t JRR Toiken or even Sarah J Maas level world building either. These books have always been guilty pleasure fantasy. Or fantasy on crack. Descriptions and character development are not something that is carried thru. Especially not by book 3. Pacing was slow as well, by chapter 8 I was fighting for my life to actually stay IN the book. A good clue that a book is amazing is when you cannot put it down and you read it throughout the day. Fourth wing is that kind of book. This one just isn’t.

There is some fun banter moments with the whole original crew, although it sometimes becomes hard to determine Ridoc, Garrett or Bodhi apart — they just seem almost like the same person at this point.
I wasn’t a huge fan of Xaden being as jealous as he was at points in this book, I truly loved him in book 1 the most when he seemed more mysterious.

Some small things were revealed in Onyx Storm, like Xaden’s mom, it touched on why Violet has silver tipped hair (but ultimately added more questions than answers) and more Info with Andarna was addressed but not fully fleshed out. This book remains a filler book. I don’t know how 3 more books will be written when nothing much got done with this one.
The ending parts felt like an info dump fever dream. I did love that till the end Violet and Xaden remained a solid couple. The whole seal of dune ring add on at the end was a massive cliffhanger. This was probably the most solid relationship they have had for all the books.
Taking in everything together with the story plus ending — I’d give this an overall 3 stars because it’s fun fantasy book candy, even when this book made me want to throw it sometimes.

The angst of Basgiath War College continues! There isn’t much I can say without spoilers! I devoured this. And it. Did. Not. Disappoint. My favorite part? The whole thing! And-Yarros, that ending? You’re killing me! Now I have to immediately reread to see what I missed! And get to annotating.
And I love the narration!

I’m going to have to do a reread of the last five chapters of this book to figure out what the heck is going on. Still, I am invested in this series, and look forward to the rest of this ride.

Rebecca, you can do better. This book felt rushed and lacked depth. Lots of filler that seems irrelevant to the plot. Missed opportunity to really pull at the readers heart during traumatic situations. The ending was extremely predictable and lacked substance. I’m invested in the characters so I will push on. But hoping the author takes her time with the last two in the series.
