This is the kind of book that you just can't set aside. Suzanne Collins has a unique storytelling style that really pulls you in. You can genuinely connect with what the characters are experiencing (or maybe that's just me, haha). She also has a knack for presenting well-known characters in a fresh perspective, whether it's a positive or negative light.

As for this specific book, it cleared up so many questions I had about Haymitch from the original series. You meet a bunch of new charac 5/5 stars

This is the kind of book that you just can't set aside. Suzanne Collins has a unique storytelling style that really pulls you in. You can genuinely connect with what the characters are experiencing (or maybe that's just me, haha). She also has a knack for presenting well-known characters in a fresh perspective, whether it's a positive or negative light.

As for this specific book, it cleared up so many questions I had about Haymitch from the original series. You meet a bunch of new characters, along with some familiar faces from the earlier books (not just President Snow, of course). Plus, you get to witness how several old characters began their journeys. It was not only enlightening but also incredibly captivating, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The Arena and all the events that unfold there really took me by surprise.

The only downside for me was that I wished it were longer. I'm used to books being over 400 pages, so the ending felt a bit rushed. I would have loved a few more chapters that delved into the years leading up to Katniss and Peeta's reaping, along with more details. Even though Haymitch spent most of his time after the 50th Hunger Games in a drunken haze, I still wanted more.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I’d definitely be interested in more stories like this.

Sidenote about Haymitch as a character:
This book add new layers to the relationship between Katniss and Haymitch. She struggles with becoming a symbol without a choice and the consequences of that. Haymitch supports her, and now we know just how much more he understands. It's not just the shared trauma. He was made a symbol too. More importantly he started this*. she is continuing what he set in motion, what was put to a stop too early. All the suffering caused since. She is his chance to *finally finish it. being a mentor was part of his punishment. to have people put into his care only for them to die over and over, marking him as a failure, putting the responsibility for their lives in his hand while he has no power to save them. It also makes him a laughing stock to the people, nobody would take words from him seriously. Until he meets Katniss and turns his punishment into the fire that burns down the Capitol. just like he used the forcefield against them. He used the arena and the platform they gave to topple them once again. Due to Katniss's POV we dont see how much part he had in plotting the Rebellion until it happens, she underestimated him as well. ...more

The Hunger Games remains one of my favourite series. It’s also one that I can still re-read, and love (unlike some re-reads, where I wonder wth I was thinking with previous high regards!). Anyway, back to this book. I love Haymitch, and he’s such a strong element of the original series. It’s interesting to get more of his backstory and inevitable tragedy.
