What Members Thought

This one was hard for me. With all the good reviews and praise this book and author got, I was expecting SO much more. The story was interesting and the characters generally likable but overall, the story was ....okay. I liked it, but didn't love it. It's not a book that I will recommend to my friends as a "must-read". Therefore, 3 stars.

4**** and a ❤
A very different take on WW II and Germany. Liesel Meminger is a foster child being raised by the very kind Hans Huberman and his verbally abrasive wife, Rosa. Liesel deals with her loss by stealing books; the first one before she can read. The allegorical story is narrated by Death.
I had heard a lot of buzz about this book when it first came out, but hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet. When a member recommended for book club, I waited to read it for the discussion.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book although the subject matter was a bit hard on the heart. I found the writing style quite unusual but the content was compelling reading. It is set in Nazi Germany and narrated by Death, who, after all, does get to meet everybody. The prose is simple, quite stark at times, and very easy on the eyes.

This may be one I try again later. It may have been that I've just been really busy and exhausted by the time I get to sit down and read, but it felt like this book just moved too slowly for me. I didn't feel like I could really get into it. Everyone else I know seems to have rated it very high, so it may be worth a reread when life settles down.

This book is powerful, emotional, life-changing, dark and heart-breaking. I adored it.
