Zero Day is the first book in the John Puller series by David Baldacci. The series centers around John Puller, a combat veteran and the best military investigator in the Army’s Criminal Investigative Division. Puller’s father, John Puller Sr., is a military legend known as Fighting John Puller for his strong-willed command of the Army’s elite 101st Airborne Division. Puller’s older brother, Robert, was a Major in the Air Force but is now serving a life sentence in federal military prison for tre ...more

This is my first David Baldacci book, and I plan to read more. This is more like a 3.5-star read. I finished feeling very satisfied, with an interesting ending but not too pat or perfect. But it lost a point or so during the parts where the author becomes very detailed, and the characters seem a little too dumb. When a postal carrier in a rundown West Virginia coal town tries to deliver a package and stumbles onto a bloody crime scene, he panics and calls the local police. The victims are an officer with the Defense Intelligence Agency, the officer's wife, and their two children. The murders seem out of place in the small town so they call the Army who send in John Puller Jr., an investigator in the U.S. Army's Criminal Investigation Command. Puller is assigned to the case and told that there's heavy in ...more

I picked this one up simply because it started with a Z and I needed that for my yearly alphabet challenge. I wasn't entirely thrilled to start another series ... But I was not expecting to love it so much! It hooked me from the beginning, and I could not get through it fast enough. It kept me on my toes and guessing the entire time. I really liked Puller's character, as well as that of his dad and brother; I'm looking forward to seeing where they go from here in subsequent books. I'm not entire ...more

1.5 stars raised to 2 stars. I've really liked the Amos Decker series, so far, so I thought I'd try this one. It wasn't nearly as interesting as the Amos Decker series. Most of the book was merely OK, but as the story went on, it got too technical and I really started getting bored. This series, I think is just not for me. It was also longer than it really needed to be. ...more
