On September 11, 2001, American airspace was closed in the wake of the terrorist attacks. Thirty eight planes landed in Gander, Newfoundland. This is such a wonderful uplifting story which is a lot to say when you consider it is centered around 9/11. It is the story of the thousands of people who found themselves stranded in Gander, Newfoundland for four days when their planes were forced down by the closing of the airspace over the United States on 9/11. This unexpected influx of people at a time of such a huge crisis could have crushed this small town and the surrounding area but instead the town pulled together and not only welcome
