I'm a sucker for a fascinating memoir, particularly those that involve places I am familiar with. Although, her portrayal of Welch, WV is accurate, it's a bit sad because I fear the rest of my beautiful home state will be put to shame by a run down coal town story. However, looking past my own fears, this memoir was compelling. This was an excellent book. But be forwarned, if your a parent with at least a few working brain cells you will really want to kick her parents in the ass and maybe even bounce their heads off a wall or two.

In a nutshell, this was the relentlessly heartbreaking (though often darkly comic) true story of four children being raised by two completely incompetent parents. The circumstances that the children found themselves in time after time during the first 16 to 18 years of their lives due to the utter selfishness of their parents were just too much to be borne!
