I haven't watched the movie and this book has been languishing on my TBR for many many years. Mostly because I just think it'll be too sad too hard to read. So, it was with no small trepidation I picked this up on audio. I figure it's time to read or unhaul.
The novel opens with an old man reading aloud from his notebook to an old woman in a bed. While that somewhat sets the scene, it didn't really get sad right out from the beginning. The majority of the novel felt very much ...more

It kept my attention during the middle but lost it again. It just wasn't interesting.

I was already familiar with this story because of the movie. This may have either helped or hurt my experience with the book...I'm not sure which. Admittedly, the writing is a little too sappy for me and I found myself mentally preferring the movie as the story moved along. Had I not known the story, I may have been more invested and emotionally involved in it, thus enjoying it more in the end.
