Enjoyable coming of age story following a little Anglo American girl who runs away and befriends a young African American woman. The author does not shy away from depicting the Jim Crowe era South as it was in the early 1960’s. Overall a well crafted story about what it means to be friends and family.
Enjoyable coming of age story following a little Anglo American girl who runs away and befriends a young African American woman. The author does not shy away from depicting the Jim Crowe era South as it was in the early 1960’s. Overall a well crafted story about what it means to be friends and family.

Beautiful language. The author's descriptions made me feel the emotion or transported me to the place. Told in the voice of a 9-year old child with an absent father and a mother who abandoned her. Starla lives with a resentful grandmother who rarely misses an opportunity to punish her in some way. She runs away on the 4th of July heading to Nashville in search of her mother and the dream of a happy family. 3.5 stars down to 3 stars, I just realized thar I didn't review this and although I enjoyed this while I was reading it, I unfortunately don't remember too many of the details, after little over a week after finishing it..
