Off Sides (Off, #1) in WACKY READING CHALLENGES

I am a hockey fan who happens to love romance stories, so imagine how happy I was to find Off Sides and how thrilled I was that it was offered for free on the day I had found it. So I read it, all in one day, as it is on the short side, and LOVED it beyond any expectations that I had.

Ryan is a the captain of his college hockey team with dreams of playing in the NHL He's also the son of a well-to-do politician and a super snobby mother. He meets Danny, a waitress whose place in life is completely opposite to Ryan's. She lost her dad tragically and had to drop out of Julliard when her mom was dying from cancer yet she is now determined to make her way in life, working many hours at the diner, paying her own way through college while holding onto her dream of returning to Julliard in the future to pursue her education in music.

Despite the strong attraction between the two of them, Ryan fights his own inner battle before deciding that yes, a relationship with Danny is worth fighting for. And fight he does.. some of his friends and teammates as well as his ex-girlfriend and mother make it clear to him constantly that they all find Danny unworthy of being with him. They don't let the naysayers get in the way of their quickly growing relationship. But then Danny is tricked into a bad situation which Ryan walks in on and the end result is him being arrested on assault charges when he stops the attacker. Ryan's mom offers Danny a way for her to help him with the legal repercussions, but at what price?

Off Sides is an amazing story and is easily one of my favorite books that I've read this year (and I've read several other good ones!). Sawyer Bennett delivers a wonderful love story, complete with hockey, a gorgeous nice guy with a touch of bad-assness when it comes to protecting the girl he loves, and an intelligent girl who stands tall when faced with constant reminders from people convinced she's not good enough for him. If I had to pick something that I didn't like about the book, it would just be that it's too short and I want more of Danny and Ryan.

#1 of the Off new adult romance series

This was pleasant and nice, but just really had no pizazz. The main characters were both enjoyable--Danny is a girl who had a music career ahead of her but had to drop out when her mother got sick, and now she's working as a waitress and going to school. Ryan is a successful college hockey player, son of a prominent politician and one of the privileged. When they meet, it's pretty much love at first sight. I have loved Sawyer Bennett's other hockey series "Carolina Cold Fury" and I had this as a freebie for a while so I decided to give it a try. I'm so glad that I did. I LOVED Danny and Ryan's story. Now, I didn't love how over the top Ryan's parents were. Could that even be possible? But, I guess it is, but it was just a bit much.

I loved Danny's spirit and her attitude. Life handed her a LOT of crap but she was just such an awesome person with the most wonderful spirit despite all of her hardship ...more
