I recently read The Rope which was #17 in the Anna Pigeon series. It was supposedly Anna's first case and I hated it. I decided to go back and read her first published book to see how the two compare. Track of the Cat introduces Anna Pigeon, a ranger in the U.S. Park Service. She's currently stationed in the mountains of the Guadalupe National Park in Texas. Hiking her way back to the station, she comes across the body of a fellow-ranger, Sheila Drury, who has apparently been killed by a mountai ...more

The memory of violence and loss drove Anna Pigeon from the city to seek peace in the Southwestern wilderness. Now a ranger in America's national parks, Anna is at one with nature and its serene, unspoiled majesty. But the brutal death of a fellow ranger in the remote West Texas backcountry - presumably by a mountain lion attack - looks suspiciously like murder to Anna. And her unauthorized investigation into the tragedy is placing her squarely in harm's way. For a trail with few leads winds thro ...more

This murder mystery takes place in Guadalupe Mountain National Park, amid the cacti, the desert, and the rough country of West Texas. I really like the main character Ranger Anna Pigeon as well as her ultra-urban sister Molly (whom we meet only through phone calls). Their relationship is close but realistic, a bit sarcastic but caring. Anna gets suspicious of the death of another ranger, but the higher-ups just want the problem to go away. She does some investigating, but it's not ridiculously o ...more

3.5***

Anna Pigeon is a US Parks Ranger who is escaping a tragic past by working in the remote Guadalupe Mountains National Park, which straddles the New Mexico / Texas border. It’s rugged country, mostly desert, but including the highest peak in Texas and some forested land. On a routine patrol to check for signs of the park’s mountain lions she notices an unusual number of large buzzards circling. The carcass must be rather large if so many birds are interested, so Anna descends into the canyon

Having just returned from one of our wonderful national parks, Yellowstone, I was definitely discouraged by how miserable all of the characters in Track of the Cat seem to be. Many of the people we spoke with at Yellowstone were seasonal workers who come back year after year and love the park. No one seemed to much care for Guadalupe National Park. I guess July in Western Texas is probably not the optimal place to be, but it made for a depressing story.

Then there's Anna Pigeon. She was off-putt
