When a major dust storm threatens the Ares 3 mission to Mars, the team of astronauts are ordered to evacuate the planet. En route to their MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle = rocket), the high winds rip a satellite dish off the habitat, sending an antenna directly into Mark Watney, tearing a hole in his spacesuit and knocking him sideways. Unable to find him in the storm, and getting a “flat line” readout from his spacesuit, the rest of the team barely manages to lea ...more

4,5 um genau zu sein ^^

This should have been a 5 star read - in fact I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I listened to it as an audiobook and although it was a brilliant way to experience this book, it is also what lost it half a star. The story of Mark Watney, who is left behind after one of the manned Mars missions is aborted, is fascinating. This is proper science fiction, with lots of science! It would be really interesting to see how much of it is feasible, but I completely admire the author for his endless ability to fin

This one came highly recommended to me by lots of people, and overall, it didn't disappoint. I'm not a science-fiction fan, I'm really not a fan of the survivalist trope, yet somehow this was still really entertaining.
I think it was just a little too long. It was funny, but by the end the jokes were wearing thin. And while the science was incredibly impressive, and accessible, it grew tedious for me. There was a lot of this kind of detail: I plugged one end into the battery and the other into th ...more

4.50 Rounded to 5 stars
For me this title is misleading, and I’m really glad. I have been putting this book off since I assumed that it dealt with Martians, life on Mars, and NASA mumbo jumbo. I was so wrong! I really enjoyed this book and loved the narrator. I read very few science fiction books, but the science fiction was more factual than some off the wall fantasy scene. The setting was Mars, and the main character, Mark Watney, was humorous so as not to dwell on his current situation, which ...more

This was a great book. Mark was a fantastic character. He was just the kind of character who can carry a book by himself. I really enjoyed his plight and I enjoyed rooting for him just as much.
I feel like this book read like a movie. I was seeing the movie in my head as I was reading it, and it kept me fascinated.
So, why the *4 STARS*, why not 5? Well, I thought it got too bogged down in the technical. I thought that it was great but it got to be too much. And I'm a scientist. But, honestly, it ...more

Reread! This. Book. Is. Awesome!! I got the audiobook read by Wil Wheaton this time around. I should read it again in another 5 years. 😃
I’m so bummed I finished. I LOVED this book. Mark Watney manages to survive 549 Sol on Mars alone! There's a lot of science that I tried to understand but it didn't take away from the story. Watney is full of sarcasm and humor which keeps the story fun to read. I now have a crush on Matt Damon. :-)
I will definitely read another book this author. ...more
