The first half of this book was so funny I wanted to read it again and again. There was a lot of information--history and factoids--that made the book very interesting, too. I credit this book on getting me back into reading after the disastrous months preceding where I barely read at all. Easily one of my favorite books. So much so, that I'm considering reading it again and I am so not a rereader. ...more

Enjoyable memoir by the amusing Bill Bryson describing his trek of hiking the Appalachian Trail, starting in Georgia and going all the way to Maine. He and his friend Steven Katz were totally new at this type of thing but learned as they went and found that they enjoyed the adventure and the camaraderie. They walked in a casual sort of way, without any specific goals in mind, but still covering a lot of ground. His stories were pleasantly funny, and the book kept my interest in a mildly amusing ...more

A really enjoyable read. Both Bryson & Stephen Katz have a hilarious turn of phrase at times. There were some laugh-out-loud moments for me; right down to the very last sentence , "...with a narrow, knowing gaze, and eyes of chipped granite", at which I giggled hysterically.

It all seemed like damned hard work, the sort of thing you'd do just to say you'd done it, the only reward the self-satisfaction of knowing, & the granite gaze, of course. It does make me feel a little like doing some local h

Bill Bryson is one of my favourite writers. His books never fail to entertain or make me laugh and his personality and ability to record experiences with clarity and humour is fantastic. In this book, Bryson decides he is going to walk the Appalachian Trail - the 2000+ mile Hiking trail which runs from Georgia to Maine in the USA. You have to give him points for ambition! The book then follows his first 6 week travail with his friend, Stephen Katz, on the first part of the trail, and then his sh ...more

From book jacket: Returning to the United States after 20 years in England, Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with America by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail. He persuaded his friend Stephen Katz to join him, and through weeks and months on the trail these two pioneers get in touch with a lot more than just life on the trail.

I had previously read Bryson’s memoir of his childhood in Des Moines (The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid), and really enjoyed his humor. I was expecting

This was a great story about the AT. Having hiked just a tiny, tiny portion of it, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to hike the entire trail. Bryson does a great job of describing the difficulties, the triumphs and the everyday of hiking the AT. He has satisfied my curiosity.
