I think what I liked most about this book was its unique subject matter. Although we are swimming in books about World War II, I don't think there have been many popular novels dealing with the war and genocide in the Balkans in the early 1990s. Seen from the point of view of Ana, a 10 year old girl in Zagreb, I was stunned and horrified at the events. I've never read a book that takes place or is about Yugoslavia or Croatia or read anything about the war that occurred there in the 90s. This was probably a book that would have been better to read than listen to, but then the words were probably pronounced correctly and they may not have been if I read them. This was a very interesting book about the Balkans War in the 1990's involving Yugoslavia, Bosnia, and Croatia. We follow one 10-year-old girl and see how the unrest changed her life from one of childish acceptance to total chaos. Although the war-time chapters were fascinating, I found the description of her healing process much more compelling.
