I hadn't expected to enjoy this book as much as I did. It was a real page turner. At first I thought I would struggle with the language - Todd, the narrator, is not educated and as it is written in the first person there are odd spellings and turns of phrase. But I got used to it and barely noticed it by the end. I loved the developing relationship between Todd and Viola, and I absolutely loved Manchee. This was so hard to read that if it wasn’t a book club choice I would have noped out about 20% of the way in. There were so many ways to make the story resonate without resorting to childish spelling and textual quirks, and I felt like it detracted from what could have been a pretty powerful read.
