What Members Thought

The only reason this book earned a 3-star that put it into "liked it" instead of a 2-star "it was ok" was the portrayal of the rich and privileged Sinclair family. This book was on point in displaying the rich's live motto, as Harris Sinclair aka Granddad likes to say “Don’t take no for an answer”.
The reasons this book was annoying:
1. The writing style
2. The anti-climatic ending
3. The writing
4. Living in Cadence's head all the time

Well, that wasn't what I was expecting...
This book was equal parts lyrical and tedious. The writing was sometimes grating, but at other times, it was almost eloquent. There were really insightful little pieces, but finding those pieces were rough at times. I did really enjoy this line though:

the characters lack development. I like books with richly drawn characters but all of these characters were very superficial and lacked depth. None of the characters were likeable, which is fine, but I found them to be rather stupid as well. I just couldn't care about any of them.
Also, I did not find the "surprise" to be all that surprising, it was pretty easy to figure out and not original. ...more

I had to stay up and finish this book. This is one of very few books that I did not guess the twist until I was reading it. Even then I wasn’t really believing it as it unfolded. This was great and may be a favorite for me in the books I’ve read this year.

The plot twist didn't really make the pretentious writing worth it for me. There were some lovely descriptions, but the characters and plot weren't really my thing.
