An intricate game of chess

I stumbled upon this book a few years ago, but had never picked it up. I am glad to have given it a second chance. The plot of two competing magicians is to put it too simply. It is more like a game of chess between two sides that draws more and more players onto the board as the moves play out in a dreamlike fashion.
