What Members Thought
I wouldn’t say this was one of my favorite stories, but it was beautifully and delicately done. This is not a horror story. This is a coming-of-age novel as a young boy grapples with his mother’s terminal cancer. It is tragic and heart-rending, but the inclusion of the monster and the parables it tells elevates it from just a focus on the sadness of the cancer to really exploring all the aspects of grief. The monster is maybe an actual monster and more likely a projection of Conor’s psyche.
