This book relies on its cutesy language to carry it. The problem is I’ve read many books written like this, so it’s not new. It’s like repeating a punch line over and over and expecting it to be funny each time.

The plot is absolutely predictable: Linus, a gay, pudgy beta male, is a type of social worker who checks in on magical children at orphanages. He is assigned to investigate an extra special orphanage with six extra special children and a wise, handsome caretaker. It’s on an islan ...more

Cerulean is such a lovely word. And so is this book. Which, by the way, I’m truly happy to have finally read.
I had heard people talking really well about ‘The House in the Cerulean Sea’ and will admit I was a bit worried that it might be just hype. It wouldn’t be the first time.
However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the book is indeed very good. It is a delightful story and I loved the characters (not the DICOMY ones, obviously; way too dull to be enjoyable). It made laugh, and I also ...more

Aw, this story stole my heart!
Linus Baker has a dreary bureaucratic job in a rather Orwellian city, evaluating orphanages for magical youth. But his special assignment to an idyllic island changes it all: an island housing nobody except a charming orphanage master, his six unusual charges, and a spunky sprite. It turns out that even though one of the children is, if reports are to be believed, the Antichrist himself, they're all basically GOOD kids. (And they're all unique and delightful, but m ...more

All the hype is true. Love, Love, Love!

3.5 stars. I'm super glad I read Door before this one. I wasn't sure it was the right idea, but I'm glad I did. Otherwise I might have been more intimidated by Door than I already was. I found this one a little too immature for me, I found the severity and seriousness of Door was better suited to my tastes. This one let me down, where I really thought it would fly above Door.
Don't get me wrong, I did still enjoy Sea, but I found it a bit too immature for my taste. I can see what people mean when ...more

This might truly be the most beautiful, precious book I've ever read!
I think going in I knew I'd like this book, I hoped I'd love it, but honestly nothing could have prepared me for just how special this book truly is and I didn't just love it like I love other books The House In The Cerulean Sea stole my heart and I loved this book more than I've ever loved a book.
This book will make you laugh, make you cry over and over again, fill you with so much joy, break your heart into a million pieces ...more
