What the fuck did I just read? Absolutely depraved, disgusting, and a wildly good time! Truly a soap opera for fans of horror. Time to go bleach my brain and read something more wholesome from Stephen King, Chuck Palahniuk or Clive Barker.

I'm not going to waste my time here with a review for a book I wasn't impressed with at all,I found the storyline somewhat boring and felt it was going nowhere and down hill fast,the characters where all so incredibly dull and at times I was totally confused with them all.It also seemed repetitive which drove me mad..."My Girl" wasn't for me and I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I was going to...Only 2 Dull stars from me ⭐⭐The only thing that's good about this book is the front cover!! 🩸 ...more

I recently read “Morsel” and loved the book. It was my first Audrey Rush novel. In the spirit of full disclosure “Erotic Horror” is not a subgenre that I have ever read or explored in the past.

The description of this storyline in “My Girl” essentially relays to the potential reader that the novel is about a “psychopath” who has been stalking a woman and has made sufficient observations to determine that he is going to end her life. In other words, MY GIRL [2023] BY Audrey Rush

I recently read “Morsel” and loved the book. It was my first Audrey Rush novel. In the spirit of full disclosure “Erotic Horror” is not a subgenre that I have ever read or explored in the past.

The description of this storyline in “My Girl” essentially relays to the potential reader that the novel is about a “psychopath” who has been stalking a woman and has made sufficient observations to determine that he is going to end her life. In other words, the psychopath is bored. “But then” the potential victim does something that ostensibly shows the stalking psychopath “the truth”, specifically that the “good girl” he has been stalking is in reality “a deviant little monster”.

Our “psychopath” moonlights as a taxi driver and has been stalking a girl named Rae for a sufficient time to decide that she is a “good girl”. But on the night he has decided to kill her she displays behavior that is completely out of character from his prior observations. Rae actually has her way with the boyfriend in the back seat of the taxi, lifts his wallet to remove cash, and winks at the taxi driver as she does it. Our psychopath just can’t believe the girl putting out and stealing from the boyfriend is “good girl” Rae!

The reader learns that our psychopath could be more accurately described as a sadistic sexual predator and serial murderer. He plans to lure her away from her mother and safety to a town close to him. The killer schemes and succeeds in getting Rae fired from her job for stealing. She was guilty of course, stealing from high end male guests at the hotel her mother runs. Rae and her mother argue and for some reason the mother feels the necessity to tell her daughter Rae that she is like her father Michael Hall. Rae is an illegitimate child, and her mother has never uttered the name of her father…until then. Rae subsequently finds out that her mother had a one-night stand with a married man who was subsequently found guilty of murdering his wife and committing suicide. The Halls had lived in the Galloway House in the small town of Pahrump. It was a cursed house, and Rae learned that the prior couple and their child had been murdered, also declared a murder suicide.

Rae meets Blaze, a man who towers over her and wears leather to include a leather over the head mask with zippers. Rae responds to his display of dominance and submits to his sexual sadism and humiliation. Blaze is a remorseless killer, and his desire is to prod Rae into committing murder. She initially denies that she has the capacity to kill someone. It surfaces pretty quickly that Rae wants to be totally dominated by Blaze but also feels a need to dominate him as well.

This is very much “rinse and repeat”, both main characters self-reflect about the other and his/her desires. The dialogue is essentially “dirty talk”, smut, and colorful original obscenities. The brutal sex that Blaze inflicts is no worse than the sick, nauseating acts of humiliation and sadism he routinely inflicts on Rae. The sexual depravity scenes in the book are overdone in my opinion, defined as feeling repetitive.

The story becomes a mystery erotic horror book when Rae cannot initially identify Blaze because of the mask, and she is raped and humiliated by the resident security officer. It is also a mystery what really happened at the Galloway House. Is Daniel the man who murdered his wife and killed himself her biological father?

Lots of questions, yes? The inherent problem is that this reader really did not care. Both main characters are unsympathetic, and Blaze needed to be put down before he uttered his first word of profanity, sadistically raped and humiliated Rae, and certainly before he murdered again. There is the caveat that his past pain, sexual abuse, and egregious neglect set the stage for his rage and psychosis to bloom and flourish. However, once he chose to torture and kill, rape and humiliate he was only continuing the abuse and no longer a victim. Rae started out as a tainted but mostly blank slate but picked up momentum fast in the “I’m Bad to the Bone” lane.

There are many surprises in this book, none of which are mentioned in this review. I asked myself whether any of the revelations influenced my feelings about the book. The truth is no. I despised the characters before things became even more disgusting and evil.

Ironically, I am reading another Audrey Rush novel at the moment, and I am 50% into the book. It has had an intriguing plot and interesting, sympathetic main characters. Rush is an incredible writer. This particular novel reviewed “My Girl” simply did not resonate with me virtually on any level.
