Okay, so it's not really urban fantasy, but I don't really want to create a catagory for cyber-punk or alternate history because I don't read that much of those particular genres.
One week later and I'm only on chapter 11. I'm bored stiff!! I'll give it a little longer and then it's all Rainey's :)
Much Later:
Well I have to say that what got me through it was Alan Cumming. Brilliant narrator. He saved the story enough for me to want to listen to the next one.

By the dusk-jacket's own admission, diesel engines are in use. This indicates to me it is not a steampunk story if steam engines are not the tech being utilized. I've only just started reading it though and am holding off on any snap judgments.
And my snap judgement was correct.
This is a very well written book, very much along the lines of what I'd like to write myself, and sounding egotistical, that is high praise. haha
Love the dichotomous world of metal tech vs bio tech. Very well done.

When I heard about this book, it was all the rage every where, everyone was talking about it. Hearing it was "Steampunk" I had to check it out.
It's one of those books that is a real easy read, you seem to fly through it easy and that's not because its not well written, it is, and there is one heck of a world thought of in the authors head you can definitely tell.
The book just gave me the feel like it was written for a much younger audience.

What if Charles Darwin had not only written about his theory of evolution but had also discovered DNA and figured out how to manipulate it? That's what happened in the world of Leviathan, with the result that by the outbreak of World War I, Britain and its allies have a well-developed biologically based technology, whereas the Central Powers are reliant on "mechaniks." This contrast alone makes Leviathan a fascinating read, but what kept me staying up way too late reading was the vibrancy of the

In English: Just brilliant!

although this is on my read shelf, i never finished it
i just couldn't get crazy enough about it to bother
this is just me....maybe a weird trend i am in.
but at the present if i am not going crazy to finish it by halfway through, it is not worth it.
never really moved me from page to page, story didn't grab hold of me, and i was not really feeling the whole animal/machine thing.
(I was hoping for a livelier steampunk adventure-maybe this being YA was the downfall for me???)
c'est la vie! ...more

Very cool ideas about clankers (mechanical engineers) vs. Darwinists (biological/genetic engineers). But it's very definitely a YA book, and the first in a series-- not a stand alone novel.
