Wow! I’m glad I read this when I did. It seems everyone has read The Fireman.
I didn’t go into this book expecting much due to mixed reviews.
I love Joe Hill’s writing because he loves short chapters and well thought out plots. His imagination is fantastic and I’m always excited to read another book by him.
Because of the mixed reviews on The Fireman, it brought down my expectations a bit.
Maybe that’s why I liked it so much! I went into this book neutral.

Well…I am done. This novel never had a dull moment. The characters were believable, the plot was good and the action never ceased. I remained tense the duration of the last third of this read. I wanted a different ending but the one that took place was the most appropriate. It will be interesting to read more of Hill’s works and compare them to this novel. Do I suggest reading it….oh yeah!

There were times when reading this I had to pause, the character of Jacob was very triggering for me and sent me mentally to places I did not wish to go back to. To the point that I was going to DNF it, I'm glad I breathed through because I wanted to know what was going to happed, I was invested.
I found The Fireman to be a very interesting and messed up read. Also feels fitting for the times in which we are living.

Well thank heavens that's over and done with! What a humongous disappointment. It all started off so well! The world as we know it coming to an end, a spore is spreading, causing people to spontaneously combust. In the chaos, nurse Harper tries her best to spread calm and cheer. She has made a deal with her husband that if they get sick, they will end it all before they burn. Except when Harper becomes pregnant she changes her mind.

First off- yes this is Joe Hill. But just because it is, doesn’t mean this is a horror. This is a dystopian novel through and through. The more dystopian novels I read- I’ve developed a theory. Since we’ve been hearing about the end of times since we’ve been born (at least for most of us), dystopian literature is popular for authors and readers alike to make sense of all that talk. They usually show a group of characters that somehow overcome the dystopian elements.

I tried. I can't even make it to 50% so I can count it as "read". It's just so boring. I don't care about any of the characters or the setting. Hill seems stuck on writing about the most boring elements of the world he's created. If there's an apocalyptic scenario, I want to see a bigger part of the world, not just a tiny summer camp in New Hampshire. I want to know more about people who stick daggers into the world, for both good and evil. I don't want to read about people who are quietly tip-t
