Trochę wyciągnięte trzy plus, ale nadal mając w odległej pamięci Wrota Baldura, nie mogę wyjść z podziwu jak bardzo poszła do przodu literatura adaptacyjno-franczyzowa - to naprawdę solidny zbiór. Na pierwszym miejscu chyba Wegner, ale stawka jest wyrównana.

P.S. Niech ktoś pokaże Dukajowi Undertale.

This is a collection of four novellas plus an essay, all connected to the Polish grimdark steampunk post-apoc strategy game Frostpunk. For those unaware of the game, its idea is that in the second half of the 19th century, there was a sharp cooling of the Earth's climate, so now almost all land is covered with ice and the only way to survive is to have some heating device and fuel to keep it working. It is impossible to be good and kind; the setup is such that a player has to make unpleasant dec This is a collection of four novellas plus an essay, all connected to the Polish grimdark steampunk post-apoc strategy game Frostpunk. For those unaware of the game, its idea is that in the second half of the 19th century, there was a sharp cooling of the Earth's climate, so now almost all land is covered with ice and the only way to survive is to have some heating device and fuel to keep it working. It is impossible to be good and kind; the setup is such that a player has to make unpleasant decisions, from letting all disabled/old die to using child labor. All authors presented in the book are well known for Polish SFF fans, with multiple local SFF awards.

The novellas:
Ciepłe mięso (Warm Meat) by Jakub Nowak
Past and present. The past story is about a ship with colonists doing through the icy ocean, trying to find a land to settle. The present is 20 years later, with a new generation living in Alaska, trading with locals, using an experimental Russian thermal well power plant and cutting parts of sperm whales trapped in ice. A lot of grimness, from amputations of frostbitten leg to a teenage girl beating her brother to take part in the meat harvest. Interesting local cults, from the Polar Christ to Inuit’s beliefs. It is a bit too dark for darkness sake. 3*
Zimne dzieci (Cold Children) by Anna Kańtoch a diary of a son of the local colony’s leader. To prove his worth, he took part in an expedition that discovered a dead colony, but for a few children (from 4-year-olds to teens). These children are not bothered by the cold, and the inhabitants of the surrounding settlement try to find out why and how. The problem is that they are unable/unwilling to communicate. The story goes into mystic, but then (seemingly?) returns to scientific explanations. This novel is nominated in 2025 for the Polish analogue of Hugo Award – the main SFF fan-voted award Nagroda Fandomu Polskiego im. Janusza A. Zajdla / Janusz A. Zajdel Award of Polish Fandom. 4*
Requiem dla pana S. (Requiem for Mr. S.) by Robert M. Wegner, my personal favorite, a story of a theatre performer turned merchant. He travels between settlements to earn a living, also performing with his team on a stage. However, the new generation doesn’t care about Shakespeare. So, he sets Romeo and Juliet and other plays for real, and even human life isn’t too high a price to do it. 5*
Wtedy zaś twarzą w twarz (Then, face to face) by Janusz Cyran
Something like a spy thriller with historical figures including Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells, as well as a totalitarian communist colony. 2*
