Anne Perry is beloved and prolific. I picked up many books and discovered they belonged in series. I often wonder if historic society will feel too oppressed to enjoy, or to relate to protagonists. This was a fantastic example of how to start off a series! The two characters who will be the focus of many books are introduced seamlessly, without any of that awkward, slightly rushed setting of the scene that is sometimes encountered. While you become invested in Charlotte and Thomas and look forward to following them beyond this first book, the book itself, this first mystery, stands strong.

This series came highly recommended and I enjoyed the first installment in the Pitt series. The mystery was good, but the social commentary about class structure and women's roles in Victorian England was so interesting. The three sisters were very different in how they reacted to social restrictions: Sarah tried to obey them all, Charlotte quietly chafed against them, and Emily worked around them and used them to her advantage. Quite interesting.
